On this date, 10 years ago, our world, not just the US, was severely shaken where the acts of terrorism arrived shockingly on the shores of the United States where the victims and the rescuers came from at least forty other nations that included people of many races, many religions, many incomes.

This shock caused us to reflect outside of ourselves, outside of USA. We were slapped into looking at this world in a different way followed by our response.

We are here this weekend at Camp Wellstone because we believe in positive change through peaceful action. In the words of Senator Wellstone, “Politics is not just about power and money games. Politics can be about the improvement of people’s lives, about lessening human suffering in our world and bringing about more peace and more justice.”

On 9-11, the arc of the moral universe took as sharp turn.

Being here today is slowly correcting that sharp turn by bending that arc back towards justice.

To continue this bend toward justice let focus on the love. The loving messages and conversations left by the 9-11 victims with their family. At this time, we will observe a moment of silence that builds on that love.

The bell will sound 5 times:

For the World Trade Center’s North Tower (1 WTC) and American Airlines Flight 11

For the World Trade Center’s South Tower (2 WTC) and United Airlines Flight 175

For the Pentagon and American Airlines Flight 77

For the United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville PA where many lives were saved due to their heroism

For the first responders of WTC lost during on 9-11 and the recovery teams working at the WTC that we continue to lose today.

CLOSING of Camp Wellstone on 9/11/2011 – Schaumburg, Illinois.

Hundreds of rescuers died alongside the people they had heroically attempted to save. Their mission – to save lives. They understood humanity and the sacrifice to save the humanity. Let’s take that message to Congress. They must execute the courage that the first responders had on 9-11. They need to serve and stand up for humanity and for what is right for this country; not for their political career.

Judges make all kinds of decisions, from the very personal, such as child custody decisions, to those with much broader impact.

Are you ready to choose your judges?

Are you ready to choose your judges?

Judges make all kinds of decisions, from the very personal, such as child custody decisions, to those with much broader impact. The decisions that judges make affect our lives, both directly and indirectly, often for many years to come. We never know when a judge we vote for today, will make a decision that will affect your life and the lives of your family and friends.

It is our responsibility to vote for judges we can trust to make impartial decisions based on their fair consideration of the facts and law. In some cases, this means that judges may make unpopular or controversial decisions. We need to trust that our judges can make those right decisions without regard to political or economic pressure. That’s why it is so important to vote for qualified people to be judges.

The Alliance of Bar Associations for Judicial Screening has created a website, VoteForJudges.org and this downloadable guide (which you can print and bring in to the voting booth) Vote For Judges Guide to help you make these important decisions.

Here is a quick summary of some judges up for election or re-election in our area. If a candidate failed to participate int the voteforjudges.org evaluation process, they earned a rating of NR – Not Recommended. The full report is available at http://www.voteforjudges.org/Alliance_ballot_order_2010_General_election.pdf

At our September 2010 meeting, he shared some stunning facts which show that Illinois is a low-tax state whose services have been starved of revenue due to inaction by our elected leaders. On its own, the slide show lacks Mr. Martire’s distinctive warmth and humor – for that you have to come to the meeting! – but we encourage you to read the fascinating presentation at the link below.
